    (i) To amend Clause 12 of the branch constitution to change the start of the branch financial year from 1 September to 1 December.

(ii) To amend Clause 7 of the branch constitution to insert a comma that was omitted in error when the constitution was adopted.

    Reason for changes:

    (i) To allow sufficient time in this and future years for beer festival accounts to be prepared and submitted.

(ii) To correct a drafting error and bring the clause into line with that in CAMRA’s model branch constitution.

    Proposed changes:

    (i) Amend Clause 12 to replace September with December, as follows: “The financial year of the Branch shall commence on the first day of September December in each year.” Rest of clause to remain unchanged.

(ii) Amend Clause 7 to add a comma after Committee, as follows: “A Special General Meeting of the Branch may be called only on the decision of the Branch Committee, on written request signed by 5 members of the Branch or by one tenth of the Branch membership (whichever is the greater), or by the National Executive.” Rest of clause to remain unchanged.

    Interpretation:

Financial year 2018/19 to run from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019.

Financial year 2019/20 to run from 1 September 2019 to 30 November 2020.

Financial year 2020/21 to run from 1 December 2020 to 30 November 2021.

Subsequent financial years to run from 1 December to 30 November the following year.

Only the National Executive or their duly appointed representatives or members of the Branch are entitled to vote at the SGM. The quorum for the SGM is seven members present (who are entitled to vote). The changes need to be approved by at least two thirds of those present and entitled to vote, and only become effective once they have been approved by the Directors of CAMRA or their duly authorised representative (in effect this means the Regional Director). That approval needs to happen before the end of August in order for the change to take effect in time to amend the 2018/19 financial year.

  • New Members' Outing Tuesday 21 November 2017 Twickenham Fine Ales

Important note: You need pre-book for this event and it is specifically for new members.

If you are one of the people who have joined CAMRA in the last two years we’d like to invite you to a special New Members’ Event. It’s a trip to Twickenham Brewery at a highly subsidised price.

The date for this attractive evening is Tuesday 21st November. We will leave central Reading at 6.30 pm and return by 11.00 pm. During our visit to this award winning brewery, we will be presenting them with their certificates as winners of awards at the 2017 Reading Beer & Cider Festival.

After the visit to the brewery and sampling some of their latest brews, we will pay a visit to another award winner, The Sussex Arms. It is just three minutes’ walk from the brewery. They have fifteen hand-pulls dispensing ales from independent breweries across the UK, including Twickenham, plus six ciders and perries. The Sussex Arms have been the local CAMRA branch’s Pub of the Year multiple times over the last few years.

We will travel by a very comfortable coach there and back. All this is on offer to you as a recently joined member for just £5. We are grateful to the Gill Ford Trust for the serious subsidy. Gill is an ex-Membership Secretary of our branch. You may bring with you one friend, but, unless they too joined CAMRA within the last two years, they will have to pay £10. Just so I clear up the legal bits – the monies are not a hire and reward contract and you are expected to conduct yourself responsibly, taking care of your own health and safety whilst on the coach and at the brewery. Any loss or damage to your person, your property, your memory, your dignity or other valuable commodities are your responsibility. We will make every effort to return by the appointed time, which may involve leaving at the agreed time without you if you fail to drag yourself away from the wonderful beers on offer at the pub.

Numbers on the coach are limited to 16, so places will be issued on a first come, first served basis. There have been over 200 new members in the last two year, plus some of the branch committee will be joining us so you can get to know them. Please book a place by 7th November as after that, if we have places left, we may open the outing to other members. Book your place by emailing brian.jonesfolk@gmail.com

Open to all members who joined in the last two years - a subsidised brewery visit.

  • Gala Awards evening for our branch award winners Tuesday 29 September 2015 20:00 Castle Tap, Reading

The evening will celebrate some of the best of the wonderful selection of pubs in our branch - and some of the excellent beers that can be enjoyed in them. As well as a reprise of the presentation of the certificate to the Fox and Hounds in Caversham, our branch Pub of the Year, we will also present the certificates to the runner-up and other two finalists and potentially reprise the Cider Pub of the Year presentation. In addition the branch has agreed to make a special award for outstanding achievement to two pubs.

Kay Wesnes of the Fisherman's Cottage will receive the Best Newcomer Award. She had never run a pub before when she took on the Fisherman's Cottage, but what she lacked in experience, she has made up for with enthusiasm supported by the sound business skills of the family operating company of herself, Keith Wesnes and Anna Wesnes.

The Phoenix Award will go to the hosts for the evening, The Castle Tap. This award recognises the way they took on a dying pub and transformed it into a healthy vibrant venue for real ale and cider.

Not content with celebrating our pubs, the breweries that won Local Beers of the Festival will be presented with their certificates. Gravitas from Vale Brewery won the overall best local beer of festival and will collect their certificate alongside those being presented to Binghams Brewery, Rebellion Brewery and a reprise presentation to the West Berkshire Brewery.

The evening is not just open to CAMRA members. We look forward to welcoming anyone who enjoys a good beer and wants to show their support for the pubs that serve them, and breweries that produce them.

  • The Rowbarge Real Ale Festival 2015 Friday 24 – Sunday 26 July 2015 The Rowbarge, Woolhampton

The summer is here! What better way to celebrate it than with a beer festival, next to the canal, in the sun (fingers crossed). This July, for the first time, we will be holding our own real ale festival here at The Rowbarge. There will be at least 20 real ales and a couple of scrumpy ciders available across the weekend, with up to 12 tipples on at any one time. We will of course have the barbecue on all weekend, weather permitting, as usual. There will also be games for kids to play in the garden, and live music from local talent across the weekend.

The main event will be on the evening of Friday the 24th, where we have four of our favourite brewers coming down to the pub. Each brewery will be holding a beer tasting session with a little bit of food pairing for good measure. We will also have a couple beers from each brewery available for sale.

Tasting will commence at 6pm on Friday the 24th and will continue throughout the evening. In attendance we will have a handful of our favourite breweries.

Including Wild Weather ales, Longdog Brewery, Stonehenge Ales and Cotleigh Brewery. If you would like to attend the tasting, please drop us an email or phone call to let us know how many of you will be joining us on the night.

Fingers crossed for good weather. Save the date in your diaries!

  • The Village - Easter Music and Real Ale Festival 15:00 Friday 3 – 17:00 Monday 6 April 2015 Weather Station, Reading

Over this coming Easter weekend three of Reading’s longtime favorite backstreet pubs will be hosting the Village Music & Ale Festival. Their enterprising landlords have banded together to create a celebration of community spirit, camaraderie, music and ale

While mainstream media talks incessantly about the doom and gloom of Britain’s pub crisis examples of pubs bucking the trend go largely unreported. Among Reading’s numerous excellent music and ale venues the Eldon Arms, the Lyndhurst and the Retreat.

The pubs are a short walk from one another in the Eldon Square Conservation Area, aka “The Village,” Reading’s oldest historic preservation area. The Village is located a short and pleasant walk along Kennet Side from Reading town centre (or a short bus ride).

The idea behind the festival is to capitalize on the close proximity of the pubs to one another in their eminently walkable neighbourhood. By providing a destination event with wide appeal to both the local community and to a much wider area in and around Reading, more people will be enticed into the village, perhaps for the first time, local musicians gain exposure, and the pubs – the magnets for the whole enterprise – will further demonstrate their value as important community assets.

The pubs will remain open until 11:30 pm on each day of the festival however being mindful of their place within a largely residential community the music program has been scheduled to end no later than 10:30 pm. This leaves plenty of time for festival goers to exit the area in an orderly fashion and to catch buses/trains in the town centre.

  • RURAS Beer Launch Night Monday 9 February 2015 19:00 Park House (University of Reading), Reading

The time has come to sample the fruits of RURAS's labour, as they proudly announce the release of 'Bitter Luck Next Time', this year's society beer.

For those of you who joined them at Sherfield Village Brewery late last year, this will be the first time you are able to drink the brew you put hard work into. For the rest of you, it will be great to support RURAS and drink in celebration with us.

As they have in the past, Park House have the exclusive first sale of the beer, and have kindly offered to sell it to us for only £2.60 per pint! We even expect to have a visit from the Vice Chancellor, Sir David Bell, to try the first pint with us.

The RURAS monkeys have been working hard behind the scenes and following this event, the beer will become available at various times in a selection of pubs throughout Reading such as: The Alehouse, The Nag's Head, London Road Eat and Drink, The Fisherman's Cottage and The Fox and Hounds (Caversham).

So come one, come all. Bring your friends; tell them to bring their friends (and so on).

All pubs are all within walking distance of each other. You are welcome to text or call 07899 980 307 to find out where we are.

Brewhouse and Kitchen: Torrens Street, Finsbury EC1V 1NG
    http://www.brewhouseandkitchen.com
Part of a small chain of brew pubs, this one has eight handpumps dispensing its own beers, together with a bottled selection from other breweries (beer menu on tables). Brewing takes place at the rear of the pub, using the kit from the Botanist at Kew. Opening time is well before noon, but no food is available until then. Large, modern building with friendly, interested staff.

Earl of Essex: 25 Danbury Street, Islington N1 8LE
GBG 2015. Another brew pub! Contemporary design, with a garden to the rear. The central, oval shaped bar houses the brewing kit. Their own brew, Earls, is usually available on one of the six handpumps, and invariably present on keg. Most of the other ales are from micros. As you enter the pub there is a blackboard on the left hand wall listing the beers available and specifying the method of dispense. Extensive bottled beer list; Gwatkin’s cider; food available all day.

The Old Queen’s Head: 44 Essex Road, Islington N1 8LN
    http://www.theoldqueenshead.com
This quirky pub now has two handpumps, both dedicated to Truman’s beers. Sofas and dining chairs are scattered over one large room. There is an old carved settle, and a fireplace at the rear with wood panelling above. Various stags’ heads and a skull look down on the proceedings, and the chandeliers are made from antlers. Food is available - mainly burgers, including psychic burgers!

New Rose (Pub sign reads ‘Just Another Pub’!): 84-86 Essex Road (corner of Popham Street), Islington N1 8LU
    http://www.thenewrose.co.uk
GBG 2015. A Locale outlet with four handpumps. Small room at the front with roses embossed into the seat backs; two large drinking spaces behind. CAMRA discount. Food available – pizzas, burgers and mains.

York: 82 Islington High Street, Islington N1 8EQ
A Nicholson’s house with twelve handpumps: there are usually four guest beers. Large, street corner pub, which confusingly looks as if it's on Upper Street. As usual with Nicholson’s pubs there is a lot of dark wood and etched glass, together with a deep red ceiling, a fireplace with mirror above, and the older back bar fittings hint at what it would have looked like in a previous age. By 1851 the York Hotel stood on this site but was rebuilt in 1872, at which time cows grazed right up to the front door. Food available.

The Three Johns: 73 White Lion Street, Pentonville N1 9PF
Corner of White Lion / Baron Street
    http://www.three-johns.com
Largish modern, two roomed pub with wood panelling, bare brickwork, a copper tiled ceiling and large windows. Three hand pumps serve beers from varying micros (e.g. Crate; Alchemy; Arbor) plus there are ‘craft’ keg beers and a good bottled beer list. Pizza menu (including pizza desserts). The Three Johns were apparently 18th century radicals. Background music.

Craft Beer Co: 55 White Lion Street, Pentonville N1 9PP
GBG 2015. Ten handpumps dispense ales from independent breweries, plus twenty ‘craft’ kegs and numerous bottled beers. This carpeted, split level pub is rather more cosy and ‘pubby’ than most of the chain, and has a small garden to the side. Burgers available.
